The Volvo XC40 is Volvo's smallest SUV, and it has been one of the brand's most popular models since it arrived. It pairs Volvo's safety technology and a clean, clever Scandinavian interior with a compact size that's easy to park and an engaging turbocharged drive. For Sonoma County drivers who want something small enough for downtown Santa Rosa and capable enough for wet roads and weekend trips to the coast, the XC40 is an appealing choice. It's also a very modern, electronics-heavy vehicle that benefits from a shop that understands Volvo's systems.
Built on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform and sold in the US from the 2019 model year, the XC40 shares its architecture with the C40 Recharge. It received a mid-cycle update around the 2023 model year with revised styling and a move to mild hybrid powertrains. At KP Motorworks, the Volvo Doctor, we service XC40s throughout Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, and Sonoma County. Here's what you should know about the engines, what each one needs to stay reliable, and how to keep your XC40 running strong.
The gas-powered XC40 uses a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder in different states of tune, and later cars add 48-volt mild hybrid assistance. The table below covers the gas and mild hybrid engines sold in the US. Exact model-year availability and ratings can vary, so we always recommend confirming with your VIN.
| Engine | Configuration | Approx. Power | Approx. Torque | Typical Model Years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T5 | 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder, AWD | 248 hp | 258 lb-ft | 2019-2022 |
| T4 | 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder, FWD or AWD | 187 hp | 221 lb-ft | Roughly 2020-2022 |
| B4 | 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder with 48V mild hybrid | 194 hp | 214 lb-ft | Around 2023-present |
| B5 | 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder with 48V mild hybrid, AWD | 247 hp | 258 lb-ft | Around 2023-present |
Overseas markets received additional three-cylinder gasoline, plug-in hybrid, and diesel engines that were not sold in the US. The all-electric XC40 Recharge is a separate powertrain and is not covered on this page.
The T5 was the engine in the earliest US XC40s, delivering strong, lively performance with standard all-wheel drive. As these engines age, areas worth watching include oil leaks, cooling system components, and carbon deposit buildup on the intake valves, which is a known consideration with direct-injection engines.
The T4 added a lower-output option with front-wheel drive for owners who wanted efficiency and a lower price. It shares the same basic engine family as the T5, so the same priorities apply: regular oil changes with the correct specification, cooling system care, and attention to the turbo system.
Later model years moved to 48-volt mild hybrid versions of the engine, branded B4 and B5. A small electric motor assists the engine, supporting smoother start-stop operation and better efficiency. These engines add a second battery and electrical system to keep healthy, so battery and charging system diagnostics are especially important.
Regardless of engine, these are the areas we most often recommend attention for on an XC40:
Not sure which engine is in your XC40? The easiest way is to check your VIN or look at the badging and engine labeling. T4 and T5 badges indicate the earlier gas engines, and B4 or B5 badging indicates a mild hybrid. If you're still unsure, bring it in and we'll confirm exactly what you have and what it needs.
